How to Properly Choose Hazardous Waste Packaging Containers?
Basic Requirements for Hazardous Waste Packaging
The packaging material must be compatible with the hazardous waste and can be selected based on the characteristics of the hazardous waste, such as steel, aluminum, plastic, etc.
Similar types of hazardous waste can be collected in the same container, but incompatible hazardous wastes must not be mixed for packaging.
Hazardous waste packaging should effectively isolate pathways for the migration and dispersion of hazardous waste, and meet requirements for leakage and permeation prevention.
Properly packaged hazardous waste should have corresponding hazardous waste labels and markings, with complete and detailed information on the hazardous waste label.
Packaging bags or containers containing hazardous waste that are damaged should be managed and disposed of according to hazardous waste regulations.
For ease of transportation, the capacity of packaging containers generally should not exceed 230 kilograms. The capacity of fixed hazardous waste storage containers such as tanks and pits may not be restricted, but approval from relevant government departments is required.
Hazardous waste should also be transported and packaged according to the relevant requirements of the "General Technical Conditions for the Transport Packaging of Dangerous Goods" and the collection of polychlorinated biphenyl waste should also comply with pollution control requirements in the "Pollution Control Standards for Polychlorinated Biphenyl Waste."
Common Protective Packaging Methods for Hazardous Waste
Hazardous Waste
Sludge
Moisture content < 80%
Packaging Method: Woven bags, laminated plastic woven bags, covered with PE film to prevent collapse, placed on intact wooden pallets or plastic pallets.
Liquid Hazardous Waste
Waste Acid and Alkaline Solutions
Packaging Method: Small open plastic drums with plastic drum seal, made of PE or PTFE materials.
Waste Acidic and Alkaline Etching Solutions
Packaging Method: Use anti-corrosion internal lining or fiberglass-reinforced plastic tanks for larger quantities; for smaller quantities, use ton drums or small open plastic drums; plastic materials should be PE or PTFE.
Oil-Contaminated (or Organic) Wastewater
Packaging Method: Small open iron drums or small open plastic drums.
Waste Organic Solvents
Packaging Method: Small open iron drums with steel drum accessories. For organic solvents with low boiling points, the liquid level must be reduced before shipment; proper ventilation and cooling should be ensured during transportation and storage.
Special Hazardous Waste
Waste Fluorescent Tubes
Packaging Method: Special wooden boxes.
Keep the fluorescent tubes from breaking during packaging and transportation.
If the quantity is small and special packaging is unavailable, they must be adequately protected against impact for safe transportation.
Waste Batteries
Packaging Method: Fully open plastic drums.
Batteries should be completely discharged or individually packaged to avoid short-circuiting.
For small quantities, packaging boxes or small plastic drums can be used.
Other Hazardous Waste
Fly Ash, Slag (Copper-Containing Resin Powder from Circuit Boards)
Packaging Method: Ton bags or fully open iron drums.
Waste Catalysts
Packaging Method: Ton bags; fully open iron drums with internal lining (or inner packaging).
Once hazardous waste is properly packaged in suitable containers, affix hazardous waste labels, store them appropriately, and await transportation for processing.
